In the future autonomous cars could inform their environment before they start driving. In the experimental vehicle from Daimler, based on an S-Class, light stripes signal that the vehicle is travelling autonomously. When started, the mirrors fold and the car lifts slightly. In addition, a special sound indicates that the S-Class is ready to drive. Whilst in motion, light signals on the roof convey to the other road users that the car has recognized them. The cooperative vehicle mimics the natural eye contact between driver and pedestrian, as if to say: “I´ve seen you”.
The goal: to create trust and to make communication between people and self-driving cars as intuitive as possible.
