いすゞとカミンズは、パワートレイン事業に関する事業提携について、2018年10月に覚書を締結し協議を開始することに合意。翌年2019年5月には、パワートレイン事業に関する包括契約「Isuzu Cummins Powertrain Partnership（ICPP）契約」を締結し、中型ディーゼルエンジンについて、グローバル規模で両社が持つ強みや技術を最大限に協力していくことを追求してきました。
このDB6Aエンジンは、カミンズ製のB6.7をベースに日本の厳しい排出ガス規制への対応などを目的に、本格的な共同開発をおこない、そのエンジンをいすゞの栃木工場で組み立てるという新たな協業の形態を図っています。いすゞ、カミンズ両社の合同チームのメンバーが一丸となり、それぞれの課題を乗り越え、その成果として栃木工場でDB6Aエンジンのローンチを迎えることになりました。
DB6Aエンジンのプロジェクトは、桜の咲く時期にICPP契約に関する話し合いが行われていたことから「SAKURAプロジェクト」と親しまれ、両社の協業が花咲くことを祈り、推進されてきました。当日のセレモニーも今回の重要なマイルストーンの達成を象徴させるべく桜をモチーフに執り行われ、カミンズのマネジメントや、両社のプロジェクトメンバーからのビデオメッセージに続き、会場が拍手に包まれる中、栃木工場で組み上げられた量産型DB6Aエンジンがお披露目されました。
In May 2019, Isuzu and Cummins created the Isuzu Cummins Powertrain Partnership (ICPP), a comprehensive agreement on the powertrain business. The companies have been collaborating globally on mid-range diesel engines ever since, leveraging their respective strengths and technologies.
The DB6A engine is based on the B6.7 engine manufactured by Cummins, and was developed in collaboration between the two companies to meet Japan’s strict emission regulations and be manufactured at Isuzu’s Tochigi Plant. Both companies worked together to overcome their respective challenges, resulting in the successful launch of the DB6A engine at the Tochigi Plant.
The DB6A engine project is affectionately known as the “SAKURA Project” because the ICPP discussions took place during the cherry blossom season in Japan with hopes that the collaboration between the two companies would blossom. Following video messages from Cummins management and project members from both companies, the mass-produced DB6A engine assembled at the Tochigi Plant was unveiled amidst great applause.
