Rolls-Royce enthusiasts conclude their historic re-enactment tour of the 1913 Alpenfhart, making a triumphant return after a 16-day, 2,600km odyssey though the Alps.

The 2023 rally closely followed the route of the original event, taking in some of the highest roads in Europe. The significance of the 1913 event in Rolls-Royce’s legend cannot be overstated. It was this challenge that established Rolls-Royce’s reputation as ‘the best car in the world’ – a crown it retains to this day.

Among the Rolls-Royce motor cars taking part in the 2023 Alpine Tour were Silver Ghosts, including registration R-1705 (chassis 2224), one of the original motor cars that formed part of the triumphant 1913 Works Team.

For the 1913 Alpine Trial, the Rolls-Royce Works cars were meticulously prepared for the hazards of a springtime crossing of the Alps. Then as now, these included extreme temperatures, high altitudes, punishing gradients and vertiginous descents – but all without the benefit of the modern road surfaces of today. The Rolls-Royce cars’ outstanding speed, strength and reliability made them the event’s unrivalled stars and drew universal praise and admiration across the automotive world.
